Cisco Energy Tax? Nortel Energy Calculator Reviewed: Episode 1

Posted by mekichan on Monday 13 April 2009 at 10:01 am

Does the Nortel Energy Calculator give accurate results, or is it a marketing gimmick? Here, we examine the calculator’s results comparing the Cisco 3750-E versus the Nortel 4548-GT-PWR. Are the results too good to be true?

Hey you bunch of Cisco idiots! Nortel’s ERS-4548 will provide PoE on ALL ports. Also, you Cisco idiots showed the Nortel power calculator page as comparing Nortel’s ERS-4548 data switch to a 3750″g”, when in the video, you compare Nortel’s ERS-4548 to an “e”. Get your stories straight! I’d like to take that saw to the 3750 myself!

The next video series will be customers turning to Cisco after Nortel enters EOL as a company! NT current stock price $0.41, it wont be long.

It’ll be interesting to see what Cisco comes up with after Nortel fixes the typos in their energy calculator. I’ve seen the power readings for Nortel switches running with and without traffic and in both cases they use about the same amount of power, and always less power than far more expensive, far slower Cisco boxes.

    Interesting.

Its kind of funny seeing Cisco get defensive about a Nortel marketing campaign.

Both the Cisco 3750E and Nortel 4548GT-PWR have the same limitations on PoE, namely that with the standard PSU, the full 15.4W DTE can only be provided simultaneously to 24 ports (or 7.2W to all 48 ports or anywhere in between).

To provide 15.4W to all 48 ports, the Cisco requires an optional higher-spec internal PSU and the Nortel requires an external redundant PSU.

Provided the comparison is between the 4548GT-PWR w/o RPSU and the 3750E-48PD-E (standard PSU) then I’d say it’s a fair one.

Hows my comment defensive? For the record we have equipment from both vendors deployed in our network and it all performs exceptionally well.

Glashoppah, I assume that you work for Cisco? As your comment appears to be based on your emotional attachment to a vendor rather then stating any facts, just like these vids! The tolly report is the only one Ive read where the result is based on the “actual” draw instead of vendor provided figures! Im happy to review one you think is credible?

John Chambers is a pillow biter and this video is pure B.S.

Uh oh, a Nortel fanboy calls someone defensive in his defensive comment.

“The Tolly Group”?? You must be joking. That whore will favor anyone who gives him a dollar.

Nortel clearly hit a sore point with Cisco to get such a defensive reaction!!!

I am unsure where the 411w came from however my only guess would be that it factors in the heat dissipation cost which would bring this pretty close!

A few labs have published test reports on both companies and have actually measured the switch draw and the results seem to lean in Nortel’s favour most times, i have recently read on that was done by the Tolly Group that is worth a read!

There’s a shocker. Marketing material that stretched the truth? Say it isn’t so.

maybe this is why their stock dropped 18 cents this week…. a HUGE drop when your stock is only $0.42… lol!! negative $9.00 EPS? sadly enough, this is just a time bomb…

The truth comes out! Looks like Nortel was being a bit un-consiuos

if the way they designed their calculator is any indication of their products, then i am truly scared

nice. The truth comes out! Looks like Nortel was being a bit misleading…

  22. Comment by diemtrader — May 26, 2009 @ 5:01 pm

Looks like their math works the same on financials!

  23. Comment by eric4214 — May 28, 2009 @ 5:10 pm

I’d say this is the eqivalent of a smack down on Nortel. They do tests like they do their financials – three card monty at best.
