Posted by mekichan on Saturday 28 November 2009 at 8:51 am

I want to have a dynamic IP address rather than a static IP address. How do I go about changing it. My server is verizon if that matters.

Odds are, you already have one. A static IP is usually something you need to request, and it is generally more expensive (since you can host websites and what not from it).

Your dynamic IP does not change on a daily basis. It may stay the same for over a year, even. There are ways you can try to force a change, but usually you need to call up the ISP to get that to happen.

If you are sure you have a static IP, call Verizon and ask them for a service change. Your IP is assigned to you by your ISP, it is not a setting you can adjust (although may will need to adjust some settings once you have it changed). Like I said though, you probably already have a dynamic IP. Most static IP’s are assigned to small businesses and servers.

Call your internet service provider and tell them you want a dynamic IP address instead of a static IP address. Normally, ISPs provide their service with dynamic IP addresses by default, as it is cheaper this way. Some ISPs charge you extra to have a static IP address. And i wouldn’t call it “convert,” as all IP addresses follow the same format.
