Is computer networking a good career? Should I study to get Cisco certified?

Posted by mekichan on Friday 8 May 2009 at 11:27 am

To be quite honest I don’t even know what cisco is or what they do. Is it like an industry standard or will they be out of date, or will another company be in favor?

I’m 26, have a bachelors degree in biology and can’t find a job. Hate biology in fact (dont ask why I took it), and want to get into computers.

Is this a field I can get into and eventually master? Do I have to go to school? Because I’m a better self-learner.

Networking is an excellent field if you are technically oriented.

Cisco is the “800 pound gorilla” in networks. They are the principal manufacturer of networking hardware such as routers, switches, VPN concentrators, firewalls, etc. and the software that runs on them.

If you are interested, look into certification training for the Cisco CCNA, or Cisco Certified Network Associate. It’s the first level of Cisco certifications and covers the basics that anyone interested in networking needs to know. There are advanced certifications available as well such as the CCNP or Cisco Certified Network Professional and the “Holy Grail” of networking, the CCIE or Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert. (Think of the CCIE as a PhD equivalent. Virtually all CCIEs earn 6 figure salaries.)

Beyond that, it depends upon what you want to specialize in. Microsoft is a major player in the Network Operating System arena, as is Linux and many flavors of Unix. A Cisco CCNA and a basic education in Microsoft Active Directory will prepare you for a successful career in computer networking.

cisco is the world largest networking equipment brand.

I have done the cisco course and it’s just networking.

they first teach you really basic computer stuff for the first week and then you get to learn more about which cable does what.
later you have to learn how to be a helpdesk person.
then you learn how to give devices such as routers and switches adresses.

you will learn a lot about the internet for example security and how ISP’s work.

you will get a lot of easy tests and some hands on activitys but overall it is pretty easy and most of the time you will be just on the internet doing whatever you want.

I say do it since it is an internationally recognised certification.

    here is the website:

    cisco.netacad.net

But a bachelors degree in biology is so much better than what cisco can offer.

cisco is really not meant for people smart enough to get a bachelors degree in biology .

I am cisco certified and I’m only 18 and I haven’t even started uni yet.

It isn’t even close to being a scientist.
It is like being a cleaner or whatever. those people are there just to serve smarter people like scientist or whatever you call yourself.

I only did cisco as part of just normal school just for the points and I will never use my certificates from cisco.

It is already past its boom. you wont make millions of dollars like before. forget IT just stick with biology and do it even if you hate it.
