How to configure PAT to pull an IP address from cable modem on a Cisco 800 series router?

Posted under Uncategorized by mekichan on Monday 11 May 2009 at 12:07 pm

I have a Cisco 800 series router, but I don’t think I can get a static IP address from my ISP. I need to configure port address translation but I’d hate to have redo it every time my cable modem gets a different IP.

Is computer networking a good career? Should I study to get Cisco certified?

Posted under Uncategorized by mekichan on Friday 8 May 2009 at 11:27 am

To be quite honest I don’t even know what cisco is or what they do. Is it like an industry standard or will they be out of date, or will another company be in favor?

I’m 26, have a bachelors degree in biology and can’t find a job. Hate biology in fact (dont ask why I took it), and want to get into computers.

Is this a field I can get into and eventually master? Do I have to go to school? Because I’m a better self-learner.

How do I set up a VPN on a Cisco ASA 5510 where the remote node is on a dynamic IP address?

Posted under Uncategorized by mekichan on Wednesday 6 May 2009 at 8:50 pm

Some VPN devices don’t have a problem with this, but the Cisco ASA device seems to demand that a fixed IP address be associated with a VPN endpoint. I need to VPN to two locations whose IPs may change, but they use a dynamic DNS service to map a static FQDN to their current IP address. I can’t figure out how to get the Cisco to use that FQDN (office1.mydomain.com, e.g.) instead of an IP address. Cisco appears to support this via some kind of “dynamic map” but I cannot figure out how to make it work. Any help or configuration examples would be much appreciated.
